Halal Pork-Free Dim Sum in Hong Kong

I could already smell the fresh steam prawn dumpling, prawn or beef cheung fun, fried siu kaw, my favorite mushroom and bbq chicken pao and other chinese cuisine before my departure to Hong Kong. The first thing that came into my mind as a muslim foodie during my first ever trip to Hong Kong, DIM SUM and it must be Halal.

Alot of planning was made into researching Halal food in Hong Kong. It might be difficult but the effort you make to find Halal food will have it's blessings. Thanks to websites like these, and these! The Islamic Centre Canteen was my main destination and a must for muslim travellers to Hong Kong.

We're here! Masjid Ammar and Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre in Wan Chai area. You can either walk (20mins) from the MTR Wan Chai, Bus No 1 or the Taxi.

Step right into some steps and turn right to take the lift to level 5. You could already smell the goodness the moment the lift door opens. The food is certified Halal by the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong.

Racks and racks of seasoned bamboo steamers. Got to get a sneak peak of the kitchen. Very clean and organised. One of the cooks is preparing to mince some tenderloin.

Dining area was not that busy during my lunch visit. That's a good sign for me. More dim sum to eat. Haha. You get a good mix of the non-muslim locals, Malaysians and muslims from some part of the world enjoying their dim sum.

First time having Beef Cheung Fun, usually I always Prawn Cheung Fun. Meat was tender with crunchy bits of spring onions, coriander leaves and superior soy sauce. Cheung Fun was steam to perfection as the rice layer just slides down my throat. Prawn dumplings is also a must. Beautifully made.

A must order is the whole fried chicken. Crispy chicken skin, well seasoned with chinese salt and spices. The chicken skin is coated with oils from the frying and fats underneath the skin. We end our Dim Sum meal with a spongy steam butter cake. This is a best-seller item. Gotta order fast before it runs out. We wanted to Ta-Paw after paying our bills, it's was finished for the day.

You have to bring this card along with you to the Dim Sum counter to select your dishes. My daughter is having a good time. Dim Sum was pure satisfaction. Time to make a move. We are indeed coming back everyday untill we leave for KL.

Kambing Guling Aqeqah

Peh! Gua cakap lu beb, memang sedap, sekarang aku pun dah terliur terfikir pasal kambing nih.

Nak nombor telefon? +60169828227 En. Mohamed. Aku berani recommend.  Selamat mata menjamu selera tatapan kambing di atas. Ampun! :)

Krispy Kreme Darabif Lamb Burger

Inspired by reading the Krispy Kreme beef bacon cheeseburger that is served in the Google cafeteria last year, hmm... why not try one and see how it would taste like. As of last year, Krispy Kreme weren't really within hands reach in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia nearest would be Bali, Indonesia. It my luck indeed that day, first visit to the Krispy Kreme shop in Berjaya Times Square and it happened to be their 6 dozen years anniversary, a box goes for 50% off! Yay!

It's simple to make. Senang giler. If doughnuts were in the fridge, micro it for bout 8secs as instructed. Slice the doughnut in half. I used a bread knife, u know, the jagged blade ones, It cuts better.

Took my Darabif Lamb burger from the freezer, slam straight onto the hot grill at high heat. Grill for bout 4 mins a side. Walla! Done! Next I place it between the doughnuts I sliced earlier,  add some nice fiery hot cili sos, I had Life, Aminah Hassan would be nice.

There you go! A sweet, salty, kreme taste burger with a hole in the middle.

44, Char Kuey Teow & Penang

Thank you to the readers and writers for voting Penang, Malaysia as 2nd (as to date of this post) for readers recommendations as the destination to be and one of the only (next to Phuket, Thailand) the only south-east destination in this interactive poll. Keep on voting. The 44 Places To Go in 2009, NY Times.

Not only that, we at the foodsters' HQ are very excited to know we're being mentioned and receiving vast amount of traffic and a link in the article (a first and honoured being in nytimes) and Penang Street Foods. Thank you NY Times writers and contributors.

"...refined dishes like the char kuey teow - noodles with prawns, chilli paste and cockles - rarely cost more than USD $2" the only char kuey teow dish that I know for sure cost more than USD 2 is the lobster char kuey teow at a whoopping USD $40 per plate at malaysian restaurant Awana, London. Mind you, with that price, it's one of the popular dishes there serving 70-80 plates daily as reviewed by the foodsters' at friedchillies.

I've not tried it, and I sure do like prawns and nothing beats having fresh succulent prawns with char kuey teow let alone lobsters.  Might just bring a raw lobster and get one my favorite and nearest-to-me char kuey teow mastro, tony's at damansara uptown to cook me up one.  "Tony, lobster char kuey teow satu!" "Apa!? Lobster... *gila punya budak*"
